อัล-ฮิกมะฮุ
This study investigates conflict management communication in relation to
 discourse, public sphere, and democracy. This study qualitatively analyzes the form
 and mechanism of conflict management in television program, Policy Debate on Thai
 PBS, using Critical Discourse Analysis as an analytical framework. 5 most viewed
 episodes of the program are collected from YouTube to represent the 3 most
 pervasive issues that the program features namely politics, society and legislation.
 The triaspectual framework consists of the analysis of text, discursive practice and
 sociocultural practice is employed in order to elucidate the format, function and
 mechanism of conflict management in the Policy Debate program. Text analysis
 comprises of content analysis and an analysis of argumentation strategies. Discursive
 analysis investigates the production and format of the program. The findings reveal
 that at the level of format, the program is designed to provide a platform, a public
 sphere where people with different viewpoint can come to exchange their ideas,
 with the program host having a pivotal role in guaranteeing that the two sides stay
 on the same issue and that the dialogue is going to be a rational one. In terms of
 content, the topic of the debate varies each week but the discourse that underlies
 the debate and is referenced to by both parties to support their point is the same
 set; the thematic confrontation between the mainstream discourse of Thainesspeace & harmony- social order vs. discourse of democracy- freedom & human rightsequality is apparent. In terms of conflict management mechanism, the debaters use
 voice of others, rhetorical question and (re)definition to promote self- credibility and
 demote that of others. The program host, the specialists and the audience in the
 studio work as the moderator and witness of the debate. Policy Debate program presents the new ‘public sphere’ in Thai society both in terms of format and
 content. While it is a program that offers opportunity for people to participate in a
 discussion of controversial issues, this platform in turns reveal dynamic set of
 identities, knowledge and realities coexisting and surrounding Thai contemporary
 controversies.
