NIDA Sets a New Benchmark in the Academic World: 3rd NIC – NIDA Conference, 2024, Featuring Top Global Keynote Speakers to Shape a Future of Sustainable Transformation

                   The National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), in collaboration with East China Normal University (ECNU), hosted the 2024 National and International Conference of the National Institute of Development Administration, also known as the 3rd NIC – NIDA Conference, 2024. This significant event, themed “Redesigning Our Common Future for Sustainable Transformation,” took place on Thursday, August 22, and Friday, August 23, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM at the His Majesty the King’s 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary Auditorium, NIDA, Seri Thai Road, Bangkok.

                   The conference was officially commenced on Thursday, August 22, 2024, with an opening ceremony presided over by Associate Professor Juree Vichit-Vadakan, Ph.D., Chairperson of the NIDA Council, alongside Professor Tippawan Lorsuwannarat, Ph.D., President of NIDA. They extended a warm welcome to the keynote speakers, distinguished scholars, researchers, students, and participants from Thailand and abroad.

                   One of the key highlights of the first day was the special keynote address under the theme “Redesigning Our Common Future for Sustainable Transformation,” delivered by globally renowned speakers: 1) Prof. Justin Yifu Lin, Ph.D. (Peking University, China) and 2) Prof. Peter Warr, Ph.D. (Australian National University, Australia). Following this, a Panel Discussion on “Rethinking and Reinventing Research and Development for Sustainable Impact” was featured: 1) Assoc. Prof. Wei Liu, Ph.D. (Beijing Normal University, China), 2) Prof. Sanit Aksornkoae, Ph.D. (Advisor to the National Economic and Social Development Board, Thailand), 3) Assoc. Prof. Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol, Ph.D. (NIDA, Thailand), and 4) Ms. Faryal Khan (Programme Specialist for Education at the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok, Thailand). The discussion was moderated by Asst. Prof. Aree Manosuthikit, Ph.D. (NIDA, Thailand) and Asst. Prof. Sid Suntrayuth, Ph.D. (NIDA, Thailand). The morning session concluded with a Thai Cultural Show by Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University, titled “Kinari Kinara,” and the presentation of the 2024 Top Paper Awards at both national and international levels. Additionally, trophies were awarded to the top three winning teams of the 1st International Sustainable Development Debate 2024, and certificates of appreciation were presented to the sponsors of the 3rd NIC – NIDA Conference, 2024.

                   In the afternoon, participants looked forwarded to a variety of special activities in different breakout rooms. These included presentations of research papers, academic articles, case studies, and doctoral research related to sustainable development administration. The academic discussions and workshops on case study writing, featuring esteemed speakers were held from both Thailand and abroad, such as:

  • A Special Talk on “The China Miracle” to “The Quest for Prosperity” by Prof. Justin Yifu, Ph.D. (Peking University, China) with a distinguished discussant, Prof. Medhi Krongkaew, Ph.D. (NIDA, Thailand). This special talk was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Saran Sarntisart, Ph.D.
  • Special Panel Discussion 1 on “Sustainable Development: Research and Policy in the Asian Community” featuring Prof. Janianton Damanik, Ph.D. (Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia), Assoc. Prof. YAN Jun, Ph.D. (School of Sociology and Political Science, Shanghai University, China), Prof. Lu Jinfei, Ph.D. (School of Public Management, East China Normal University, China), Prof. Kiyoto Kurokawa, Ph.D. (Ritsumeikan University, Japan), and Suhaimi Bin Haji Abd Samad, Ph.D. (Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia).
  • Special Panel Discussion 2 (Online) on “Striving for Excellence: Navigating Reputation and Meritocracy in Global Governance,” featuring Prof. James L. Perry, Ph.D. (Indiana University, USA), Prof. Tom Christensen, Ph.D. (University of Oslo, Norway), Adjunct Prof. Girol Karacaoglu, Ph.D. (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand), and Assoc. Prof. Giorgi Dgebuadze, Ph.D. (Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Georgia).
  • Special Panel Discussion 3 on “Revisiting Contemporary Case Study Research Practices,” featuring Assoc. Prof. Judhaphan Padungchewit, Ph.D. (NIDA, Thailand), Assoc. Prof. Jongsawas Chongwatpol, Ph.D. (NIDA, Thailand), Assoc. Prof. Vesarach Aumeboonsuke, Ph.D. (NIDA, Thailand), Assoc. Prof. Danuvasin Charoen, Ph.D. (NIDA, Thailand), and Asst. Prof. Thasanee Satimanon, Ph.D. (NIDA, Thailand).

                   The final day of the 3rd NIC – NIDA Conference, 2024, on Friday, August 23, 2024, was featured another keynote address under the theme “Redesigning Our Common Future for Sustainable Transformation,” delivered by distinguished speakers: 1) Prof. Yongyuth Yuthavong, Ph.D. (Honorable Member of the NIDA Council, Thailand) and 2) Adjunct Prof. Krisana Kraisintu, Ph.D. (Ramon Magsaysay Award 2009). This was followed by a Panel Discussion on “Interdisciplinary Pathways to Sustainable Development: Challenges and Solutions,” featuring: 1) Emeritus Prof. Vitit Muntarbhorn (Chulalongkorn University, Thailand), 2) Prof. Pier Paolo Pasqualoni, Ph.D. (University of Innsbruck, Austria), 3) Prof. Faiz Shah, M.D. (Yunus Center AIT), 4) Prof. Jacky Fok Loi HONG, Ph.D. (University of Macau, China), and 5) Ms. Choo Leng Goh (The Athenee Hotel Bangkok, Thailand). The discussion was moderated by Asst. Prof. Sid Suntrayuth, Ph.D. (NIDA, Thailand). The afternoon session was closed with the presentation of national research papers in the field of Development Administration across 12 disciplines, including Public Administration, Business Administration, Economic Development, Applied Statistics, Social Development and Management Strategy, Environmental Development Management, Language and Communication, Human Resource Development, Law, Tourism Management, Communication Arts and Management Innovation, and the International College.

                   Over the course of these two days, more than 1,000 scholars, researchers, faculty members, students, and other interested participants attended the conference at NIDA, with many more following via the LIVE Facebook broadcast on NIDA Thailand. The 3rd NIC – NIDA Conference, 2024, has been met with overwhelming success, receiving enthusiastic feedback from participants both domestically and internationally.

                   In conclusion, the 3rd NIC – NIDA Conference, 2024, now in its third consecutive year, has elevated Thailand’s academic conference platform by attracting distinguished scholars from around the globe. This event has sparked ideas and inspired the integration of knowledge to collaboratively design a future focused on sustainable transformation. This aligns with NIDA’s philosophy and vision of being “The Wisdom for Social Development and Leadership for Sustainable Global Development.”
