The Harmonization of Thai Laws with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14) “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development”
Abstract
This article presents the harmonization of Thai laws with the UN’s sustainable development goal 14 which is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development (SDG14). The hypothesis is that in order for the current Thai laws to be used as one of the significant tools in achieving SDG14, while certain parts can be readily applied, some need revision, amendment, and modernization so that the laws shall be in consistence with the current international agreements, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982. The UNCLOS refers to, for instance, the control of sea acidity level that must be linked to the environmental problems of air and ocean; increase in citizen participation in management of regional conservation measures; legislation of scientific marine research; and assurance for access to market for local fisheries.
