Planned Reaction or Sudden Reaction?: Strategic Transformation as a Response to Market Disruptions

Abstract

This research examines how SMEs respond to market disruptions. Specifically, the paper examines whether SMEs’ strategic transformations are more likely to occur incrementally across time, or occur suddenly during periods of market disruptions. Empirical results show that when market conditions are stable and easy to interpret, SMEs are more likely to undergo incremental transformation when the market is favorable. However, when there are disruptions in the market, SMEs are more likely to undergo transformation when the market is unfavorable. Implications for research and managerial practice are provided.
