Abstract

This article stems from a research paper aimed at investigating the relationships among situational work factors, psychological traits, psychological states, and ethical mastery behaviors of civil officials in the Ministry of Finance in Thailand. The conceptual framework of the research was based on the Moral Tree Theory and the Interactionism Model.The researcher distributed 16 questionnaires-each for one variable-to 380 mid-level executive civil offcials (C 6-8) from all departments (excluding state enterprises) under the Ministry of Finance. The resuits from the study found relationships among many sub-variables.

In the big picture, however, three independent variables, situational work factors (4 sub-variables), psychological traits (5 sub-variables), and psychological states (3 sub-variables) could not explain ethical mastery behavior (2 sub-variables: social support behavior and reasonable mastery behavior).

The sub-variables that could explain both social support behavior and reasonable mastery behavior were seeing good examples of ethical work behavior, attitude toward ethical work behavior, and belief in internal locus of control at work.

The order of important predictors, from most to least of the sub-variables that could explain social support behavior, was belief in internal locus of control, seeing good examples of ethical work behavior, religious life style, attitude toward ethical work behavior, situations that favored ethical management, and future-orientation and self-control at work

The order of important predictors, from most to least of the sub-variables that could explain reasonable mastery behavior, was seeing good examples of ethical work behavior, mental health, attitude toward ethical work behavior, moral reasoning, belef in internal locus of control at work, and family economic state.

The sub-variables that could not exolain any behavior were tempting work situation to make misco
conduct t attitude t toward being a civi official as career, and Inowledge of the code of conduct for civl offcials.
