Abstract

Being a Thai masseuse is a profession that is part of Thailand’s intellectual heritage and is one business that generates revenue for Thailand. The “masseuse” is labeled as a poor career. Then the traditional Thai masseuse is often assumed to offer sexual services. This research aims to study the sex stereotypes of female traditional Thai masseuse; case studies of traditional Thai massage parlors in Pattaya, Thailand. The research findings pointed that two correlated factors of the sex stereotypes were (1) prostitution and (2) stereotypes of the word “masseuse” that create a misunderstanding about the female traditional Thai masseuse. The poor image of the female traditional Thai masseuse caused by the environment of the establishment and the needs of male customers who preferred female traditional Thai masseuse more than male. It provided an opportunity to engage in secret prostitution. The motivations of getting into a traditional Thai masseuse are the good income and friend’s persuasion. The main reason for choosing to be traditional Thai masseuse is about a lack of educational qualifications. Female traditional Thai masseuses are satisfied in their career while others look at this career negatively. Besides, they feel the traditional Thai masseuse as a career that can make a high income and they also proud of their career which requires high expertise.
