Abstract

The objective of this qualitative research “Characteristics of Fake News in Thailand and the approach to counter them”. There are two objectives of this research: 1) To analysis Characteristics of Fake News in Thailand by using qualitative content analysis. The sampling was collected from proving information from two sources: The Facebook Fan Page ‘Anti-fake News Centre’ (collected 87 news) and The Facebook Fan page ‘SureAndshare’ (collected 48 news), 135 news in total, from 1 January 2019 to 31 January 2020. 2) To discover the suitable solution to handle with fake news problem in Thailand. The three persons in-depth interviews with the expert representative, academician, and journalist. Analysis of the characteristic of fake news found that fake news have three sections including 1) The characteristic of sources such as mainstream media, website, Facebook fan page, and Line 2) The characteristics of the content formats are included in an article, messages, news, photography, video clip, and link 3) The characteristic of fake news, there are five subsections including (1) The characteristics of the issues presented as fake news including sexuality, strange things, religion and politics, legal issues, health issues, imminent alarm issues, and some issues related to famous deaths. (2) The characteristic of languages in fake news: using exaggerate words, using a special mark, using wording for entreat readers to continue spreading fake news, using colloquialism. substandard typing as well as using foreign alphabet which difficult to examine. (3) The characteristics of fake news headlines found three types: the use of language to stimulate emotions and feelings, creating a value of headlines, also making a news headline standing out. (4) The characteristics of fake news content: building credibility from fake content by fake information related to the content to make information much more credible, old true news, unspecified news, partial presenting information to make readers misunderstanding, some tricky advertisement product sales and exaggerated the properties, and incorrect news. (5) The context of fake news: the fake news will have irregular page alignment and disorganizing form, creating fake websites and impersonating symbol from a famous institute, also modifying a government document. The results of fake news solution study discovered that all sectors must cooperate in solving problems. The role of media organisation should maintain credibility in mainstream media, emphasise facts and knowledge to the population in various situations rapidly, keep acting more than reflecting on the events in online media. Besides, the government roles should facilitate the faster checking related to agency information for all population, establish policies to effectively checking fake news information with reliable, accurate, and impartial as well as encouraging people to have investigation fact skills and see through all media. The role of education sector should establish clear policies and be open mind for children to ask a question and foster them having skills to distinguish between fact and opinion, having a wide range of solve problem process, and all-around evaluating the received information. The platform owners should use technology to investigate fake news and false information, to create more creative communication environment. Lastly, to investigate fake news should not monopolies by anyone is the most important thing, all public need to work together and always keep checking information, does not remain silent if found any false information. Should be made a comment and continue mentioning to make false information away from circulating system. Meanwhile, having media awareness skills, consider skills, and always keep checking the accuracy of received information. Using discretionary to consider the received information from online media and not be faster to forward unsure information. These skills will be an important and sustainable approach to reducing the problem of fake news in Thailand.
