Abstract

The aim of this paper is to develop a freight mode choice model for durian export originated
from the eastern region of Thailand to China under the new China-Thailand railway development
plan. Two top fruit destinations in China and their current transportation modes including 1)
Guangzhou by maritime transportation, and 2) Youyiguan border, Pingxiang by truck transportation are
studied. Two surveys are conducted: the first one aims to determine the major factors affecting freight
mode choice decision and the second one aims to investigate the mode choice decision using a stated
preference technique. The stated preference technique is used to survey 99 decision makers in the
fruit export companies. The binary logit model and the regression model both use the same set of
variables from data collected in the survey. The results indicate three factors including logistics cost,
transit time, and reliability are significant for mode choice decision in both maritime and truck exporters. We observe the modal shift of exported durian from the current to the rail transportation. The models can be further applied to study in other agricultural or perishable products exporting from Thailand to China
