Abstract

Exploring the Process of Change in Traditional Folk Media “Fawn Leb/Fawn Tian” This study titled the “Exploring the Process of Change in Traditional Folk Media “Fawn Leb/Fawn Tian” has three research objectives. The first objective is to study the changes in the elements of the traditional folk media “Fawn Leb/Fawn Tian”. The second objective is to the changing role of the traditional media “Fawn Leb/Fawn Tian”. The final objective is to study the factors that influence the changes in the traditional folk media “Fawn Leb/Fawn Tian”. The research methodology selected for the study is the qualitative research. The data collection was done by in-depth interview of 16 informants. This includes three professors from the College of Dramatic Arts Chiangmai, two local sages, five students from the College of Dramatic Arts Chiangmai and six tourists. The second means used for data collection is the non-participant observation of the 720 years anniversary celebration of the Chiangmai Koom-Khun-Toak Cultural Center and the College of Dramatic Arts Chiangmai. The research findings can be summarized in three major points based on the objectives as follows: 1) The findings reveal that a majority of the changes to the traditional folk media “Fawn Leb/Fawn Tian” are only superficial in nature. A majority of these changes in the process are the result of timing constraints and the development of new dance moves. In terms of the costume, the design is dependent on the organizer of the event with the (6) objective to make it attractive to the tourist audience. A majority of the performances still utilize the orchids as part of the accessories. It is found that some events utilize artificial flowers or other flowers to replace the traditional orchids. The traditional authentic artificial fingernails and candles are still used to maintain the traditional cultural identity. However, there are some locations that do not allow the use of candles. As a result other lighting equipment that resemble flashlights may be used instead. In the past music was played by the “Tueng Nong Drum Band”. However, due to the lack of expert musicians, CD players have replaced the live music. In terms of the change in the form of the performance, the formation is usually adapted to fit the location. 2) The way of life of the people have changed in line with the social trend. This has resulted in the change in the roles of the traditional folk media “Fawn Leb/Fawn Tian”. The traditional role that the performance had in linking the folk way of life to the Buddhist tradition has reduced in importance. Today the “Fawn Leb/Fawn Tian” performance is a part of the shows that reflect the Lanna culture designed to entertain or to show case the unique tradition for tourists. However, one role that is retained from the past is the promotion of harmony in the community. 3) The changes in the traditional folk media “Fawn Leb/Fawn Tian” is the result of influences from people, social trends, cultural viewpoints, along with economic, political, and technological changes.
